Imperfect repairs

By Angie Kings-Lynne, Repair Cafe Perth co-organiser

Even if repairs aren’t perfect, they’re still valuable. In fact, some would argue that visible repairs add to the story of an object. In Japan, crockery is sometimes repaired with gold and the repair is seen as a unique aspect of the piece.

When my daughter needed a red dress to wear at her school concert, we could only find a hand-me-down with buttons missing. We decided to make a feature of the mismatched buttons, and doing the repair as a team made it even more special.

Far from being defects, visible repairs can be reminders of the effort we’ve expended make our possessions endure because we value them.

Please note: At Repair Cafe Perth, we don’t do repairs with gold!
